The notion of sworn translators was introduced in 2019 by the Republic of Cyprus, to ensure the quality of translations issued by translators in Cyprus. A sworn translator is a translator registered in the Registry of Sworn Translators and is authorised to issue certified translations as a sworn translator under the provisions of Law N. 45(I)/2019.
The Registry of Sworn Translators, overseen by the Council for the Registration of Sworn Translators under the Press and Information Office of the Republic of Cyprus, encompasses individuals authorized to issue sworn translations. According to the governing Law, a sworn translation refers to a valid and accurate rendition of a written text or document. This translation can be from English, French, or German into Greek, and vice versa, and it must bear the official personal stamp of the Sworn Translator in Cyprus.
It’s essential to understand that sworn translations cannot be issued directly between two foreign languages. For instance: sworn translations from English to Greek, sworn translations from French to Greek and sworn translations from German to Greek are permissible. At the same time, sworn translations from Greek to English, sworn translations from Greek to French, and sworn translations from Greek to German are also permissible.
Consequently, sworn translations directly between foreign languages, such as English to French or German to English, are not allowed. The process typically involves translating from the original language (e.g., English) into Greek first and then from Greek into the target language (e.g., French or German).

Sworn translations are usually required if you intend to present an official document at an administrative service within Cyprus or abroad. Document examples include but are not limited to educational documents, marriage certificates, birth certificates, death certificates, criminal record certificates, passports, identity cards, bank accounts, property titles, company documents, medical reports, and legal documents.

What language combinations do you offer?
According to Law N. 45(I)/2019, “sworn translation” is the valid and accurate translation of a written text or document from English, French and German into the Greek language and vice versa, which bears the official stamp of the Republic. According to the same law, a sworn translation cannot be issued directly from English to French or German to English. If you still require a sworn translation it must be done first from English to Greek and then from Greek to French.
