Why choose Cyprus for your wedding?

Cyprus is not just a sun-soaked Mediterranean paradise; it’s also one of the most sought-after wedding destinations for couples from the UK, Ireland, and other English-speaking countries. From turquoise beaches and dramatic cliffs to picturesque villages and charming town halls, Cyprus provides an unbeatable setting for your special day.

Imagine exchanging vows under the endless blue sky, with the shimmering sea as your backdrop, followed by a sunset photoshoot that looks like it’s straight out of a travel magazine. Whether you’re after a barefoot ceremony on the beach, a sophisticated gathering in a luxury resort, or a romantic event at a vineyard or mountain chapel, Cyprus has it all.

Even better, weddings performed in Cyprus are legally recognised in the UK and across Europe, making the paperwork smooth and hassle-free.

Why Cyprus is perfect for British couples

  • English widely spoken: Almost everyone from officials to vendors communicates comfortably in English.
  • Streamlined legal process: Much simpler than in many other European or overseas destinations, plus the authorities accept documents in English, so you do not need to translate your documents into Greek.
  • Quick and affordable travel: Flights from the UK are frequent, short (around 4.5 hours), and reasonably priced.
  • Spectacular venues: Choose from luxury resorts, ancient castles, botanical gardens, cliffside terraces, or beachfront settings.
  • Consistently good weather: Over 300 sunny days a year, which means your outdoor ceremony is practically guaranteed to be perfect.
  • Welcoming atmosphere: Cypriots are known for their warm hospitality, which extends to foreign couples tying the knot on the island.

What documents do you need?

Each Partner will need to bring the originals of the following documents:

  1. Valid Passport (with at least six months validity)
  2. Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) – obtained from your local UK registry office. This proves you’re legally free to marry.
  3. Full Birth Certificate – showing parents’ full names.
  4. Decree Absolute – if previously divorced.
  5. Death Certificate – if widowed.
  6. Change of Name Deed – if your name has been legally changed.
  7. Proof of Address – recent utility bill, council tax statement, or bank statement (optional but sometimes requested).
Important legalisation requirements:
  • All UK-issued documents must be legalised with an Apostille from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
  • If your documents are in English, you’re good to go. If they’re in any other language (such as German, Spanish, French, Italian), they must be translated into Greek by a Certified Sworn Translator registered in Cyprus.
Crucial Note About Apostilles & Translations

Authorities in Cyprus are very strict with documentation:

  • Without an Apostille, your document is invalid.
  • All documents must be in English or Greek. Any other language requires a sworn translation into Greek by a Certified Sworn Translator registered in Cyprus.
  • DIY translations, Google Translate, or non-certified translators are not accepted under any circumstances.

Same-Sex Couples in Cyprus

While Cyprus does not yet allow same-sex marriage, it does legally recognise Civil Partnerships for same-sex couples, offering nearly identical legal rights and protections as marriage. These include:

  • Inheritance rights
  • Joint property ownership
  • Tax benefits and deductions
  • Medical decision-making rights
  • EU Residency and family reunification

The process for establishing a Civil Partnership is very similar to the marriage process in terms of required documents and legalisation.

Step-by-Step Marriage Process in Cyprus

Step 1: Reach Out to the Local Municipality

Popular municipalities include Paphos, Limassol, Ayia Napa, Protaras, Larnaca, and Nicosia. Contact the marriage officer well in advance, ideally 4-6 weeks before your intended date, to secure your slot and confirm document requirements.

Step 2: Select Your Ceremony Type
  • Standard Marriage: Ceremony takes place within 15 working days after submitting documents.
  • Express Marriage: Ceremony can happen within 2-3 days or even on the same day (extra fees apply). Ideal for couples on tight schedules.
Step 3: Attend the Municipality in Person

Upon arrival in Cyprus, both parties must:

  • Visit the Town Hall with all original documents.
  • Verify and sign the official marriage declaration.
  • Pay the relevant fees.
  • Confirm your ceremony date and details.
Optional Step: Choose a Venue

Many couples choose to hold the legal ceremony at the Town Hall but opt for a symbolic blessing or celebration afterward at a hotel, beachside venue, or private villa.
